We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Mark Peters, who is the CEO of GOLDOC, the Commonwealth Games Management Committee. Mark headed up the bid that secured the games event for the Gold Coast and is an experienced sports administrator.
Our Operations team Chairperson, Tim Winslade, had a chance to reminisce with Mark on their involvement with the 1990 World Rowing Championships in Tasmania and talk about some of the opportunities that may be available for churches in the events surrounding the Commonwealth Games in 2018.
Mark attends New Life Church at Robina when he is not travelling with work and is also part of the board of Sports Chaplaincy Australia. He has a lot of responsibility managing 180 paid staff, a number that will swell to around 3000 by the time the games arrives, plus 15,000 volunteers and thousands of contractors. Mark sees good opportunities for the churches of the region to serve around many of the proposed ‘live sites’.
We are grateful for Mark’s willingness to talk with the Beyond Gold GC and look forward to contributing to conversations around the faith centre planned for the Games village and event chaplaincy.
